WHAT IS WORSHIP

In worship, we experience God’s Word through preaching, the sacraments, and speaking and singing. We proclaim the Lord’s infinite worth in a service ordered by the Scripture. The liturgy guides us in learning truth and transforms our affections so that we rejoice in truth, goodness, and beauty from a Christian worldview. Worship forms us as it elevates our desires away from the false beauties of the world and their counter-liturgies to focus our hearts upon Jesus as he is offered to us in the gospel. This can be expressed through diverse liturgies and musical styles.

Sacraments

Sacraments are visible signs the Lord has given us as promises of his grace. The word sacrament

cannot be found in the Bible but

comes from the Latin term sacramentum, which was used to translate the New Testament word for mystery. As the word implies, sacraments are sacred. The Lord

Jesus Christ gave us two, baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We baptize

believers’ children and adult converts as recipients of God’s grace to mark their entrance into the church. We eat the Lord’s Supper as it reminds us of Jesus and that by eating this meal by faith, we receive Christ and all his

benefits.

Prayer

Through Jesus Christ, God has opened a way for us to speak to him directly, and he speaks to us through his holy Word. Prayer can be directed to God Triune or each person of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Spirit). Private and public prayer is part of our services and church life, engaging us with the

Lord. We believe in approaching God with sincere hearts for praising, confession, requests, and overall communion.

Preaching of the Word

God’s inspired Word is our firm foundation. It guides our worship, use of sacraments, prayer, church, and lives. As the Lord has graciously and mercifully communicated to us through the Scriptures, we give attention to

its public reading and proclamation to know our Lord, his will for our lives, how the Scripture applies and confronts us in our time and place, and to

understand truth, goodness, and beauty in the world. We depend upon the Holy Spirit’s regenerating and illuminating power for all of this.
